Ecosys Semantics

What is EcoSYS?

It's an ongoing conversation on the dynamics of social ecosystems, now focused on K12 Education. more

Framing of this Resource Topic:

The definition of key concepts is important in any meaningful collaboration, as discussed in The DNA of Collaboration, Ch.5 so we will use this page to expand key terms that require more clarity in the K12 Ecosystem.

KEY TERM

Implications

Follow-up Actions to be pursued

R6.1 Accountability

Considerable negative energy associated with this term in K12; we need to unpack this and better understand why

Often associated with blame

Better synonyms might be 'commitment' or 'responsibility'

In corporate context, Accountability='end to end ownership for a series of tasks'

In corporate context, Responsibility='who does a specific task'

In silo or bureaucratic environments, lack of trust or role definition often breeds blame and related Accountability problems; we see this in K12

Accountability may have emerged from silo/bureaucracy world

Accountability in K12 m/b a direct backlash to unions and tenure

Negativity in use of Accountability in K12 may have been caused by corporate types infusing business thinking in ecosystem problems, will result of defensiveness & polarizing camps

Perhaps individuals s/b accountable for their actions, institutions (school systems, schools) for the delivery of services?

Social system comparison: "entitlement mindset"

Significant traction re: Carol  Dweck's "growth mindset" from her book "Mindset" (2006)

Expanding this concept further in F9 topic.

Should add Carol Dweck for thought leader focus, to unpack "growth mindset"
